HERON® DESKTOP 2.5 Manual

HERON® is a professional mobile surveying system.

It is a portable and autonomous instrument for real time scanning in indoor and outdoor environments.

Just walking (or driving) with HERON® you can:


  • produce in real time a 3D map and measurable blue print of your path
  • take panoramic photos (if camera is present)
  • localize your position  (tracking workflow)
  • carry on change detection analysis of your site (tracking workflow)


The HERON® Desktop software is suite of tools inserted into the system workflow using the following capabilities: 

    • processing the acquired data
    • optimizing the final survey, also with the usage of ground control points or points cloud from other sensors
    • registering (aligning) together several acquisitions (trajectories) and data from other sensors (TLS, Drone, etc)
    • analyze and extract information for HERON surveys 
    • exporting 3D point cloud models, images and blueprints in open format compatible both with desktop or web applications
    • preparing reference maps starting from HERON point clouds, point cloud from other sensors or CAD/BIM model. These reference maps are usable for the tracking workflow

Manual overview

The manual is organize 6 main chapters:

  • Setup: in this chapter the installation and set up process for the software suite is reported.
  • Getting started: this chapter explain how to start a project and how to chose the proper workflow and usage mode.
  • Workflows: this chapter explain the possible workflows that the user can follow to process the HERON data
  • Modes: Heron desktop offers three modes of usage. This chapter explains how to take benefit from these different modes
  • Annex: Deeper details about the component of the HERON software suite are reported in this chapter
  • FAQ&TIPs:  Answers and suggestion based on users frequently questions are offered in this chapter




This manual is intended for new users with little or no experience using Heron® Desktop software but also for advanced users that want to know all all the commands/parameters and the tips for complex data processing.
